Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the
insertion of thin sterile needles into specific
points along the body to reduce pain and
inflammation, increase blood circulation, reduce
stress, and unblock the chi or energy.
How does it work?
Acupuncture is
based on balancing the ‘meridians’ which are
invisible channels of energy, or chi that flow
between the organs and the surface of the body.
In a healthy body energy flows smoothly; in an
unhealthy body or in a state of disease the chi
gets blocked or stagnant. Acupuncture helps to
move the blocked energy and return the body to a
state of balance.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel
no pain during an acupuncture treatment. Jeff is
known for his gentle technique and many of his
patients come to him specifically for this
reason. When left to relax, most people will
fall asleep during an acupuncture treatment.
How big are the
needles?
The needles are
very fine and much smaller than hypodermic
needles (the ones used for drawing blood). In
fact you can fit about seven acupuncture needles
inside a hypodermic needle. An acupuncture
needle is about as thick as a strand of hair!
I’m scared of
needles!
Don’t worry, the
needling technique we use is very gentle and we
will do everything possible to make sure you are
comfortable.
Where do the needles go?
Most points are on
the lower legs, lower arms and back.
Do I have to
undress?
You may be
required to remove your top and/or pants and
cover yourself under a sheet for back
treatments. At no point would you be exposed or
uncomfortably uncovered.
How many
treatments will it take?
A more accurate
answer can be given after an initial evaluation.
It is important to remember that TCM is not
instant and you should allow 4-6 weeks of
treatments once or twice a week to get the full
results.
How long does it
take?
The initial
evaluation can take between 45mins to 1 hour.
Subsequent treatments take approximately 45
minutes to 1 hour as well depending on your
particular condition.
What happens
during the initial evaluation?
In the initial
evaluation we will take a medical history, ask a
series of questions and perform a few tests in
order to determine your root constitution. Once
the root constitution is established we will
find the root imbalance. Then a treatment plan
will be formulated for you. The plan may include
acupuncture, supplement suggestions, exercises,
and dietary changes.
I’m really
motivated to get better, what else can I do?
We can give you as
many suggestions and tips as you can handle! TCM
takes into account many aspects of life and
there are many ‘tools’ you can incorporate into
everyday living.
What if I just
want to relax?
Most people find
acupuncture to be very relaxing and its good to
have some quiet time by yourself during a
treatment.
What will happen
after a treatment?
After acupuncture
some people notice an immediate reduction in
pain. Others will notice a mild aggravation of
symptoms for a few hours. For example if you
have shoulder pain you may notice your shoulder
feel heavy and achy for 2-3 hours. This is
normal and it will feel better after a good
night’s rest. The majority of people report
feeling calm and relaxed after treatment.
I heard about
people reusing needles, do you do that?
Absolutely not.
The needles are used once and then properly
disposed of.
I am healthy, do
I need acupuncture?
Everybody can
benefit from acupuncture. TCM’s greatest asset
is prevention. Just as taking your car for
regular oil changes prolongs its life; balancing
the body and moving stagnant chi will improve
your life.
Does it help
with…?
Because
acupuncture balances you from the root, it will
help balance most symptoms you are experiencing.
To know for sure how a specific condition will
respond, it is best to have an evaluation.
